![]() ![]() We use the framework of the Ashtanga yoga sequences, which are a wonderful tool for developing your own self practice over time. Our teachers are highly skilled and experienced and are there to support you with your own practice so that you can explore practicing in a way that resources you. As with any yoga practice, it is important not to rush and to move in a way that feels comfortable in your own body. Vinyasa – synchronised breath and movement progressing through fixed sequences of posturesīandha – the use of internal muscle engagements and energetic holdsĪnyone can benefit from this dynamic system of yoga. When we are able to combine these three elements, this creates a deeply relaxed state of concentration. Tristana method – Posture (asana), regulated ‘free’ breathing, and gazing points (driśti). The fundamental practices of the Ashtanga Yoga system are: We might be following the same sequence each time, but no two practices are the same. The repetition and familiarity of the postures provides a daily frame of reference from which to observe your state of mind and your ‘felt sense’ of your body moving. When practiced mindfully and in a way that supports each individual person this system of yoga can be very therapeutic and has the potential to be transformational. As and when your body feels ready to do more, your teacher will share new postures with you that are added to the sequence. It becomes our own daily personal experience of movement and breath awareness, creating an independence in your practice that is empowering. ![]() We repeat a set sequence of postures each time we practice, so that the sequence becomes familiar, and in doing so we develop a self practice. Poses (asana) are linked in a sequence with each held for a number of breaths (typically 5) breaths before transitioning through a specific series of movements (Vinyasa) to the next pose. When practised regularly, it can help to develop strength, flexibility, stamina and help to cultivate an all-round feeling of well being and a still and focussed mind. Each asana has a unique choreographed number of movements into and out of it. What is Ashtanga YogaĪshtanga vinyasa yoga is one of these systems of Hatha yoga that synchronises breath and movement in a flowing sequence of asanas (postures). In what we might call ‘Modern Yoga’, there are many schools and systems for practicing that have evolved, but many of these systems have postural and breath or meditation practices at their heart. By practicing simple breath and meditation techniques and yoga asana regularly and with awareness, many of the other aspects of yoga also begin to unfold and the practice has the potential to become transformational, and our awareness starts to expand beyond that experienced on the yoga mat and into our daily lives. ![]() It is a system that incorporates many elements and practices, not just the postures (known as asanas) that have defined much of the yoga taught in the west today.
